PBIS in the High School setting

PBIS is used in schools for students of all ages to promote positive behavior in a proactive manner to avoid unwanted or dangerous behaviors. The strategies used in PBIS set school-wide goals for all students then monitors student compliance in following the set procedures. Many schools develop a mantra for example "Respect, Responsibe, Safe" then develop systems to support and sustain the strategies throughout the school year. School leaders and all staff implement evidence-based practices to build a positive learning environment for all students. PBIS involves the ongoing collection of data to monitor progress of students and make individualized decisions for each student. In the high school setting there are three contingent issues that school leaders should consider: school size, school culture, and ages of students (www.pbis.org/topics/high-school-pbis).

School Size

If your high school is large and divided by departments, administrators will need to be consistent across all departments when implementing PBIS. Students and teachers need consitency and predictability to be successful with PBIS (www.pbis.org/topics/high-school-pbis).

School Culture

High schools focus on academics and less on teaching social skills or behaviors. The culture of the school is made up of the people inside and what their expectations are. If PBIS is going to be successful in a high school setting, then all staff need to support the culture of PBIS and prioriitize the desired outcomes (www.pbis.org/topics/high-school-pbis).

Age of Students

High school students are at the age where they want to have a voice in the decisions that affect them, even at school. Leaders of the PBIS team in a high school will need to address how to incorporate student voice into their framework (www.pbis.org/topics/high-school-pbis).
